When can Ukulele Groups Resume Sessions During Covid-19?

The Covid-19 lockdown in Melbourne is now easing and soon many activities will begin again. While this will be great for community groups, we at Bayside Ukes think that there is a need to proceed with caution before starting back at the Hampton Community Centre due to the increased hazard of contracting Covid-19 from the mechanics of group singing. There is a higher risk of contracting the virus in an enclosed space. 

For those who are unaware of these health risks, the following video gives detailed health and scientific advice from experts with regard to group singing in an Australian context. This information is also applicable to anyone singing in a group during this pandemic. The video takes about an hour but it is worth viewing for health and safety reasons.

The main recommendation is that singing groups should not get together inside until there have been no new local cases of Covid-19 for at least one month. Bayside Ukes will be following the advice of these experts and we look forward to such a time when we will be able to play together in the real world.

We will update the calendar on this blog before we resume our sessions depending on the rate of transmission of the virus in Melbourne.

Bayside Ukes Back for 2020

Next week (Tuesday 28 January) Bayside Ukes sessions begin for 2020 from 7 PM at the Hampton Community Centre. It will be great to get together again to play our ukuleles and sing.

Now is the time to brush up on the songs we did last year and be ready to tackle some new material.

There is nothing like a bit of ukulele madness to make you feel good so come along. We look forward to welcoming any new members. (For more information see our About page).

Bayside Ukes Sandy Village Festival 2019

Bayside Ukes members had a wonderful time performing at the Sandy Village Festival last Sunday. Despite the slight drizzle, the audience seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Thank you to everyone in the group for their hard work. Another big thank you to our terrific audience and to all the group members, family and friends who came to see our performance.

Finally we would like to thank the Sandringham Village Traders for including us in their music line-up. Bayside Ukes really appreciates their support and we are glad to be a part of such  a great festival.

Bayside Ukes at the Hills Ukulele Festival 2019

Bayside Ukes had a fun day on Sunday performing at the Hills Ukulele Festival, held at the Emerald Primary School in Emerald, Victoria.  The weather was perfect, with sunshine and a light mountain breeze.  It was a pleasant drive through the hills and lots of people had made the trip to attend the event.

Bayside Ukes members enjoyed performing nine songs on the main stage for an appreciative audience. Thank you to everyone for your hard work with the rehearsals and for your good humour.

The festival was very relaxed and it was enjoyable seeing the other groups who were programmed throughout the day.  There was great food and coffee and a ukulele market place that was very popular.

Thank you Dan and Emerald Primary School for hosting a wonderful festival.  We had a wonderful time and will definitely put it in our calendar for next year.

Misty Mountain Hop Where the Ukuleles Fly

If the bustle and stress of city life is getting you down there is nothing like a change of scenery to refresh the spirit, especially were there are multitudes of ukuleles. That’s a good reason to head to the Dandenong Ranges for the Hills Ukulele Festival next weekend.

On Sunday May 19 at 11am Bayside Ukes will be playing on the main stage at Emerald Primary School. For more information see the previous post on this website.

Here’s a song to get you in the mood for a trip to the hills.

We’ll be packing our ukes for the misty mountains, up to hills where the ukulele spirit flies! Come and join us.

Bayside Ukes Back for 2019

On Tuesday, January 29 at 7 pm, Bayside Ukes are back at the Hampton Community Centre.

As we head into our sixth year we plan to include some new and exciting songs that will sound great on the ukulele and will enhance everyone’s playing and singing skills.

This year there will also be plenty of opportunities for those who are raring to get out and perform with the group.

We are lucky enough to have many dedicated members, some of who play more than one instrument and are happy to share their knowledge with newcomers.

To get the most out of our sessions, we recommend that absolute beginners have some lessons before joining the group. Also see our Links page for online lessons. Beginners who can already play some basic ukulele chords will benefit greatly from playing with more experienced players and should improve quickly with our help.

We are a friendly bunch so don’t be afraid to come along and join us. It’s cheaper than a pint of beer or a glass of good wine and much more fun.

Happy Holidays from Bayside Ukes

Bayside Ukes has finished its sessions for the year. We’ve had a great year with several performances, the most memorable being the Sandy Village Festival in October.

A big thank you to all our members for making 2018 such a wonderful, fun year. Your enthusiasm for the ukulele is what it is all about.

Thank you also to all those who have supported this blog. It’s great to have an audience of fellow Ukulele lovers.

Just for fun here are a couple of festive songs that are just made for the ukulele. The first is performed by the fabulous Memphis Ukulele Band. The chords can be found on the Doctor Uke website.  The second, being typically Aussie, is just plain silly. For a link to the ukulele chords click here.

Bayside Ukes: The Sandy Village Festival 2018

Well we did it, and what a fun time we had. It was a beautiful day, with a sea breeze from the nearby Port Phillip Bay. The beach road is directly behind the Stage, hence the rumbling noises in the background of our song videos.

We were really lucky with the fine weather and there was a large audience. They seemed to enjoy our performance for which we are very thankful.

Bayside Ukes To Play 2018 Sandy Village Festival

Bayside Ukes will be performing this coming Sunday at the Sandringham Village Festival on the main stage in Melrose Street at 2.00 pm.

This is a great chance for fellow ukers and those planning to take up the ukulele to come and see what we do. It should be great fun and we look forward to meeting other ukulele players.

The festival is run by the Sandy Village Traders to showcase their businesses with stalls, food and entertainment for people of all ages. It is the tenth anniversary of this popular Bayside event and we are glad to be included.

Bayside Ukes is Back for 2018!

Bayside Ukes is raring to go in 2018. Hope all our members have had a great summer break and are looking forward to some more ukulele fun.

Tomorrow evening (Tuesday, January 30) our sessions will recommence at the Hampton Community Centre from 7.00 pm. New members are very welcome or if you are visiting our town just pop in.
